As Only Sons Can Do

I saw a toad upon my step.

He looked at me and I at him

then ambled off in hops and jerks

as only toads can do.

I saw a squirrel upon my porch.

He shook his tail and fussed at me

then scurried off and up a tree

as only squirrels can do.

I saw some birds on my back porch

eating grain and seeds.

Then they saw me and fluttered off

as only birds can do.

I saw my cat upon the  hearth

stretched out full length asleep.

I looked at him but he slept on

as only cats can do.

I saw my son as he ran by

then stopped to hug me briefly.

Then off he dashed with my quick love

As only sons can do.   q
