Topic 5:  Sex education

1.      Species reproduction is a natural phenomenon for all species of life.  Without it, none of us would be here today and the earth would be barren of all life forms.  Sex is a part of our genetic inheritance and cannot be eliminated by telling it to go away.  Moreover, hiding sex is a challenge for anyone on the outside trying to get in --  and be assured, everyone gets in eventually.  Lets just hope they all get in with the proper knowledge to handle it in a way that is best for them and for society as a whole.

2.    Why is reproduction so embarrassing to us so-called intelligent beings?  As I see it, the embarrassing part is a learned response from the teachings of those who decide what we should, or should not, learn.  In our society, these standards were set almost 2,000 years ago by the Christian Church and the pious soles who then regulated almost all aspects of life.  There was then, and is now, debate at to whether these teachings were/are the best way to approach such an important part of life.

3.    Consider the following:  (I don't know whether this would work but it may be worth a thought.)  Seems to me that teaching children about sex would be best done before it becomes an issue; for example, before the child reaches puberty.  Perhaps the best time would be along with any standard biology curriculum in elementary school.  Here it would just be a lesson of no extraordinary importance; that is, it would just be something that happens to everyone and everything -- curious indeed but not earthshaking.  With this as background, transition into puberty would be much less traumatic and the instruction on how to handle sex much less daunting.
